James Hyland

The London Shadow Show

James Hyland is the writer and producer of The London Shadow Show TV and radio series, and plays the role of "Monsieur" Shadow Man, the strange and disturbing master of ceremonies.

He has more than fifteen years experience as a writer alongside his extensive career as an actor. His work has been described by Time Out as “the bastard offspring of Reservoir Dogs and Carry On” as well as “Surreal, funny and cathartically close to the bone”. Plays include the critically acclaimed production of Hard Times which he jointly adapted from the novel by Charles Dickens, described by News Shopper as "An inventive adaptation rich with meaning and startling visuals”.

His co-adaptation of Derek Jarman’s life story in the Riverside Studios’ production of Jarman Garden also received critical acclaim and was voted “One of the five best shows in London” by BBC London Radio. Under the mantle of his production company, Brother Wolf, Hyland has written and performed in numerous projects, some of them controversial, including Dead Meat, described by Time Out as "dark, daring and utterly bananas". He followed this with Play the Game ("A fruity anarchic recipe of brash screenplay, cartoon satire and theatrical black comedy" - Time Out).

He has also devised and written adverts for television such as Persil Colour and Nike Vapor, and will follow his critically acclaimed one-man show A Christmas Carol - As told by Jacob Marley (deceased) with another Dickensian adaptation. Film scripts include Sharks and Blackbird.
