Burke and Hare, Part One

This is the story of the infamous 19th Century Scottish Grave-robbers who weren’t Scottish and didn’t rob graves. They were actually Irish and as robbing graves to supply the needs of Edinburgh’s anatomists proved to be rather hard work, they just took to murdering people – usually their neighbours – for profit.
.
In collaboration with their common-law wives they set about supplying corpses for Dr John Knox an eminent Scottish surgeon with considerable enthusiasm and gusto. The play follows their business exploits from small beginnings, through their days of peak output to the final reckoning - set against a world that is becoming recognisably modern.

Happy Listener, IRAN

Twenty Six Miles’ is a compelling and amusing drama about Dorando Pietri, the Italian marathon runner, who in the 1908 London Olympics, collapsed as he came into the stadium and was helped over the line.

Though deprived of his medal, on appeal by the Americans, Queen Alexandra was so taken by his efforts that she had a special cup made for him. The play tracks the Queen’s infatuation with Dorando, where in a dream sequence he appears in her bedroom , and later is more abandoned than a Queen should be.

JACKER & BAKER

A True Story

JackerBaker

Jacker & Baker throws fascinating new light on the famous race, drawing on the only known copy of the unpublished memoirs of Arnold Nugent Strode Strode-Jackson (in the possession of the author).

Jacker & Baker by Michael Hodd is a radio play based on the story of two undergraduates who became lifelong friends when they were unexpectedly chosen to represent Great Britain in the 1500 metres at the 1912 Stockholm Olympics.

One went on to be a war hero, wounded in action three times, awarded the DSO and three Bars (a record) and becoming, in 1918, the youngest Brigadier-General in the British Army. The other was a Quaker and a pacifist who created the Friends Ambulance Unit, serving on the front-line in WW1.  Devoting his life to campaigning for disarmament, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1959. Jacker & Baker recounts how the two friends - out-classed, inexperienced and beset with problems - set about preparing to take on the unscrupulous American team, containing the World Record holder, in what has been described as ”the greatest race ever run”.

Actors Avi Nassa, Andrew Ward and world renowned guitarist Esteban Antonio, who has been playing the guitar since the age of three, combine talents and collaborate to throw dramatic light upon the intense and shocking life of perhaps Spain's greatest modern poet, Federico Garcia Lorca.

This play celebrates the genius that Lorca was, 76 years after his assassination by Franco's facist regime. Avi Nassa wrote Purple moon because he felt that not enough people know the truth behind Lorca's work and shocking death, especially new generations. Avi Nassa brings a fresh new approch to Lorca's work and character. During his research, Nassa was helped with information supplied in the book 'Lorca Assasination' by Ian Gibson - and would like to thank Gibson for his fantastic research.

Avi Nassa is the artisic director of Whispering Eyes Theatre Co. Actor, writer and magician, he has worked for the past 30 years in all aspects of the media and was nominated for a BAFTA Award. Avi Nassa would also like to take this opportunity to thank Saul Reichlin for his invaluable assistance in developing Purple Moon.

WILD ELUSIVE BUTTERFLY – Act I

A drama in 3 parts

webbbby

Alice In Wonderland with filth.

Jeremy Drakes, March 2012

In Act One of Wild Elusive Butterfly, cargo vessel Turmoil prepares to set sail for the Southern Ocean.  Shipowner Daisy Reculver and cargo owner Tom Devine negotiate terms and conceal desire.  Pregnant Jill and husband Jack explore the limits of marriage.  John and Peter enjoy contentment.  Primordial spirits feel undervalued.  And a tornado is approaching.(Wireless Theatre Company, March 2012)

Inability to be honest with a loved one.  Failure to sustain a relationship.  Powerlessness to save a child. Wild Elusive Butterfly is primarily a love story.  Daisy and Tom negotiate, and navigate the pitfalls that love and loss bring.  The people in their lives (and sometimes beyond) help make them who they are - and try to shape them into who they were meant to be. A dictionary definition of loss is 'detriment, disadvantage or deprivation from failure to keep, have or get'.   The play's characters are almost all recovering from or dealing with this emotional or physical dispossession.  They have sacrifices to face, choices to make.  Their stories intertwine whilst they search, ignore and try to fill their individual voids. What is the cost of honesty?  In a business world where communication is prime, personal lives fall apart as characters struggle with what they need to say, what they should say - and what they want to say. Loss can push friendship to its limit; relationships can be stretched; individuals make unrealistic demands.  Sometimes, only help from beyond the present world and lifetime can provide the clarity needed to go on. And you can never go back. (Josephine Arden, March 2012)
